The Winchester Gun Factory in New Haven was founded by Oliver Winchester in 1866. The factory produced lever-action rifles, which were popular among hunters and frontiersmen. In 1873, the company introduced the Model 1873 rifle, also known as the "The Gun that Won the West," which quickly became one of the most popular firearms for its reliability, accuracy, and ease of use. The factory played an important role in American history, supplying firearms to soldiers during the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II, creating a workforce of 14,000 people at its peak. Production ceased in 2006 due to the changing market conditions, increased competition from foreign manufacturers, and the rising costs of doing business in the United States. The factory buildings were left vacant for several years. In 2009, the buildings were purchased by a developer who sought to transform the historic factory into an apartment complex called Winchester Lofts. The project aimed to preserve the historic character of the factory, while also providing modern amenities and sustainable features. Winchester Lofts is a successful example of adaptive reuse of repurposing historic buildings for new uses.
